Attorney Rex Fernandez is a leading human rights attorney that handles many of KARAPATAN’s cases, including Melissa Roxas’ case. Melissa Roxas is a well-known Filipina American human rights advocate who was abducted and tortured by suspected elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines on May 19 thru 25, 2009. The experience of Ms. Roxas is considered typical for the 200 cases of abduction and 1,010 cases of torture recorded since Gloria Macapagal Arroyo became president of the Philippines in 2001. KARAPATAN is an alliance of individuals, groups and organizations working for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Philippines. KARAPATAN gathers and compiles data regarding human rights abuses in the Philippines.
